Solo cooking #6 - sushi and soba
June 2008
Noodles and Rice:
Sort of linking in with yesterday’s somen noodles, today I am eating soba. The similarity is that they are both served cold and delicious. The difference is that they are totally different noodles ( a sort of weal link).
Anyhow tonight I could think of nothing easier to cook by myself, for myself than a plate of soba noodles, some salad vegetables, and some sliced katsuo tataki (slightly grilled bonito) with ponzu sauce.
The most time consuming part was boiling the noodles, the least was eating it all up. I should have made more.
Does Viagra Give Athletes A Boost?
June 2008
Healthbolt: Looks like that little blue pill is moving out the bedroom and into the sports arena.
Many athletes believe that taking Viagra will help improve their performance in the field. And preliminary studies, showing a 40% performance improvement for cyclists taking Viagra, support this believe.
But experts aren’t convinced. They argue that even though Viagra works on the nitric oxide in the body and causes blood vessels to expand resulting in increased heart function and more oxygen in the lungs, it’s not a guarantee that it will improve an athlete’s performance.
In fact some doctors suggest that it’s actually Viagra’s more well-known effects on men’s sex lives that might be the reason for an athlete’s improved performance on the field. Here’s what Dr. Gerard Varlotta, director of sports rehabilitation at New York University’s Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, has to say …
“If athletes are euphoric after sex after taking Viagra, they may be euphoric about their athletic endeavors,” Varlotta said. “That may make them a better athlete.”
Meanwhile, the World Anti-Doping Agency ain’t happy. They are currently studying Viagra’s effects in athletes. If they decide that it is a performance inducing drug, they may look at banning Viagra. And that would be a performance in itself.

Could your sports bra power your iPod?
June 2008
That’s Fit: Filed under: Health and Technology, Sustainable Community, Fit Fashion
Could the movement of your breasts within your sports bra create enough energy to power a small device, like an iPod? The short answer is yes, it certainly could. But there’s more to it than just bouncing them around enough to create energy — that energy then has to be harnessed.
Slate recently had an article on what would need to occur in order to harness the power of our swaying breasts (I mean actual energy power – not the power to stop men in their tracks or knock over a small child), and believe it or not, there’s some serious technology already at work regarding this. However, each possibility has its problems.
For example, one researcher has fabric made of nanowires that could easily be used to create a bra. However, it couldn’t be washed — ew! And then, there’s the Lightning Pack technology that’s already at work in backpacks for serious hikers and the military, and while this technology could be used on the bra strap, there’s a generator and a piston involved, and, long story short, it just wouldn’t be too comfy.
