From the ground up

November 2007

CASSIE Rowlands rarely buys shrink-wrapped corn or bags of salad from her local supermarket. She doesn’t eat oranges imported from California, either.

And she eschews pesticide-sprayed fruit and vegies in favour of chemical-free food grown by small Australian producers.

But Rowlands isn’t a health zealot.

She just orders a fortnightly box of fruit and vegies from Sydney company Lettuce Deliver, which specialises in delivering almost 100 varieties of certified organic, locally grown produce directly to your door.

“I was disappointed by the standard of vegies at the supermarket. They didn’t last very long, often didn’t taste very good and standing in a long queue is no fun, either,” says Rowlands, 27, adding that a work colleague first told her about the trend for getting a box home delivered.

After ordering a $35 set box of mixed seasonal fruit and veg for herself and her partner, she graduated to a $50 box once a fortnight, topping it up with extra items not included in the week’s selection.
