Infusion sticks
March 2007
Aromatherapy has always been known to help prevent stress and promote relaxation. Aromatherapy involves many different combinations of oils, which all have their own particular benefit for the body. Aromatherapy can be achieved through massage, or through oil burners. The latest trend in arometherapy are aroma sticks. The sticks are slender bamboo reeds that are placed in a bottle of oils. The reeds absorb the oils and diffuse aromatherapeutic scents. The intensity of the aroma can be refreshed by flipping the sticks. These sticks are a cleaner alternative to oil burners and can be found in many shops that sell aromatherapy products.
The Phi Phi Islands of Thailand
March 2007
The beautiful Phi Phi Islands in Thailand are back in business after the devastation of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Day trips can be taken to these islands via Phuket. During one of these trips you will be able to visit Maya Bay, which is the site that was used to film The Beach, the 2000 movie about Leonardo DiCaprio’s hunt for the perfect beach oasis. The location is as good as it looks in the movie. The beach is not spoilt by pollution or overcrowding as boat trips usually only stay a short time.
You can also visit the main island Phi Phi Don, where tourism has led to the establishment of over-priced markets and expensive resorts.
If you want to get wet, there is snorkelling at Monkey Beach. The reef is better here than on the mainland, although it is still well short of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. You can also swim at Bamboo Island.
The most peaceful and serene place to visit is Maya Bay, where the turquoise water allows you to forget the hustle and bustle of the mainland.
Taking time out to relax
March 2007
Everyone knows that taking time out for yourself is important for reducing stress levels. One yoga technique that can be helpful for relieving stress can be done in any quiet room without any extra gadgets or trinkets. Dim or turn off the lights and lie down on your back. Let your hands flop down to either side of your body with your palms facing up. Also let your legs lie slightly apart and let your feet flop comfortably out. Now focus on your hands and feet and allow your breath to stay measured but light. You can also imagine energy flowing into your hands and feet while you breathe in, and bad toxins leaving them while you breath out. After spending time on your hands and feet, move to your wrists and ankles. Repeat what you did for your hands and feet. Keep moving up your arms and feet, repeating the breathing. Then you can move to your chest, stomach and head. After you have through your whole body, just focus on your body as a whole while keeping your breathing regular. When you are ready, roll onto your side and then sit up.
Hopefully this session will help you to forget the stresses of everyday life for awhile and re-energize you for the rest of the day.
